The world’s stone. Durban’s hands.

About

Origin

Studio Marbella began in a workshop. For sixteen years, our fabricators have cut, shaped and polished stone for other people’s homes — counters, floors, walls. Work measured in millimetres and finished by hand.

The eye

You learn a material by working it every day. Which slab wants to be seen up close. Where the veining resolves. How an edge should meet the hand. In time, the eye begins to see objects where others see surfaces.

The turn

The studio is what happened when that eye turned from rooms to objects. Serving boards, trays, platters — each cut from a full slab, chosen for its veining, and finished to the same tolerances as the architectural work. The workshop does not know another standard.

The stone

The stone comes from wherever it is best. Mostly from the old quarries of the Mediterranean belt — Tuscany, the Spanish coast, the islands of the Marmara — and sometimes further. Every marble was a seabed once; the veining is a record of what the water left behind. We name each piece’s stone and origin, because the stone earned it.

Marbella: by one old reading, the place of the marble; by another, the beautiful sea. We are named for where the stone begins. The work happens where we stand.

Place

Everything is cut and finished in Durban, in the workshop of Stone Slabs — the fabricator behind the studio — and every piece passes through the same hands before it leaves. The work can be seen, and held, at our Durban showroom.

Close

The rooms were always for other people. These pieces are for you. Made by hands that work stone for a living.
